Everything You Need To Be Stronger Than Cancer
Jen Miramontes founded Cancer Champions as a way to help those battling and recovering from cancer treatment. When her mother was diagnosed with esophageal cancer, the doctors told her to drink a well known “nutrition beverage”, but after one look at the chemical-laden ingredient list, Jen decided to do things her own way.
Unfortunately, there didn’t seem to be any readily available resources for nutrition and fitness advice during cancer treatment. Thus began the process of building Cancer Champions.
Fast forward a decade or so: Jen met Ann Murray Paige at a mutual friend’s barbeque. Instantly bonded by their New England roots, Ann turned to Jen’s expertise as a Certified Cancer Exercise Specialist to help her maximize her treatment regimen as she battled metastatic breast cancer. With the addition of Damian Bramer, Certified Nutrition Consultant, Cancer Champions truly began to take shape.
Today, the program is a non-profit and serves the cancer community nationally. With experts in nutrition, fitness, and mindset, Cancer Champions is tailored specifically to the needs of those battling and recovering from cancer. Welcome to the community!
Meet Your Wellness Team
Founder, Cancer Champions
Certified Cancer Exercise Specialist
Certified Medical Exercise Specialist
Certified Personal Trainer
I have been involved in sports and fitness my entire life and for the past twelve years I have been blessed enough to work as coach, personal trainer, teacher and Medical Exercise Specialist. There is no health issue more personal to me than that of cancer, and because of my personal experiences of losing loved ones, I am fully committed to making a difference for those fighting this awful illness. That’s why I launched the Cancer Champions program. Cancer Champions is an online program for cancer fighters and survivors, as well as their caretaking team. We offer a library of hundreds of recipes formulated with cancer-fighting ingredients, fitness videos tailored to the unique needs of cancer fighters, and mindset guidance to address the mental battle against cancer. Along with this participants will receive weekly live calls with me and the Cancer Champions nutritionist Damian Bramer.
My mother, my father, Ann and so many others I have had the honor to work with are truly the reason that Cancer Champions came to be.
Where it all started: sports and fitness have always been an important part of my life. I was a four-sport high school athlete, participated in team sports in college, and have run hundreds of marathons and half-marathons. After graduating from Pepperdine University, I spent decades on parallel paths, working in both the corporate and fitness worlds. Over 10 years ago, I made the decision to shift my career focus to fitness, working as a personal trainer and launching a successful boutique fitness studio.
Then, about five years ago, I realized my true calling was to help cancer patients, survivors, and those who want to live healthy and active lives. In researching ways to support cancer patients through fitness and nutrition, I found there was really nowhere cancer patients could find credible fitness and nutrition information combined with a caring community, all in one place – that’s why I started Cancer Champions.
Here’s the story of how this total wellness-focused resource for cancer patients came to be:
“I want to hike in and out of the Grand Canyon.”
Those were the words my mom said to me after receiving her diagnosis of terminal cancer. We knew the average person with my mother’s diagnosis did not have long to live, so I immediately began training my mom for her hike.
After plenty of hard work and following her first round of radiation and chemo, Joanna Dunlap Cowden did indeed hike in and out of the Grand Canyon.
After the successful, challenging, and emotional trip, I committed to deepening my understanding of the special challenges faced by cancer patients. I earned a Medical Exercise Certification, with an emphasis on cancer.
While I ran a successful fitness studio, led a variety of classes, and provided personal training for many clients, I continued to search for ways to specifically support cancer patients, including volunteering for cancer-focused non-profit organizations.
Then, at a friend’s barbecue, I met Ann Murray Paige.
Ann had been diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004 at age 38. Within minutes, we realized there was a reason we were both at this gathering. Both of us grew up diehard Boston sports fans in New England, and we were both on a mission to support people on their cancer journeys. Ann had been reaching cancer patients and survivors through her books, short films and speaking engagements; I had been using my expertise in health, fitness, and nutrition to support cancer patients with specialized training and workouts.
Ann and I became a team. I learned about the many challenges that cancer patients face, and she learned about the valuable role of fitness and nutrition in overall health. As an added bonus, we also became great friends. Our families hung out and took trips together, and we even went to the final game of the Boston Red Sox 2013 World Series championship in Boston together.
Before Ann lost her long and courageous battle with breast cancer in 2014, she said I gave her “five extra years” of being with her children, having fun, working out, living life, and finding joy. She also told me that helping cancer patients one-by-one was not enough. She tasked me with figuring out a way to reach more cancer survivors with the fitness and nutrition program I had developed, and to continue to grow the supportive community that we had begun to build.
Ann’s words gave me the determination to do what I had been thinking of, which was to focus more of my time and energy into a program designed specifically for, and responsive to, cancer patients and survivors.
I went on to earn a Cancer Exercise Specialist certification, one of just 500 certificates that have – to date – been awarded worldwide. As a result, I launched Cancer Champions.
Being able to be so deeply involved in both my mother’s and Ann’s battles against cancer was a privilege I will never take for granted. Helping them fulfill their dreams and live life on their terms has forever changed the way I approach fitness and nutrition, and I am fully committed to making a difference for those fighting all forms of this horrible disease.
The Cancer Champions program offers a variety of workouts for all fitness levels, trauma-informed yoga practices, and wellness-focused meal planning and recipes. We also create community by hosting weekly live video calls and a private Facebook Group.
So much of what informs the work we do at Cancer Champions comes from what I have learned from my mother and Ann, and from what I have learned working with so many other incredible humans along the way.
We hope you join our community. We will do everything in our power to support you as you continue your cancer journey. And as always, we will continue learning from you so we can continue to grow our services in ways that best support cancer fighters, survivors, and Cancer Champions.
Yoga and Meditation Instructor, Cancer Champions
Certified Trauma Center Trauma Sensitive Yoga Facilitator (TCTSY-F)
Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher (ERYT)
Yoga Alliance Continuing Education Provider® (YACEP®)
I love helping people reclaim their power and embody resilience. It brings me so much joy to facilitate mindful movement for wellness and healing, and I have had the pleasure of sharing embodiment practices for many years.
I draw on my training in Trauma Center Trauma Sensitive Yoga (TCTSY, 2018) and as an Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher (E-RYT 200, 2013) in my work with survivors. I also am deeply influenced by my experience with other movement modalities, such as dance, Pilates, and weight training. Also invaluable in my work are the observations and personal stories shared with me by hundreds of clients.
My approach is guided by self-compassion, empathy and with an intentional emphasis on inclusivity and anti-oppression. As part of the Cancer Champions team, I am deeply grateful to share this body-based, felt-present-moment practice with cancer fighters and survivors, and with all who wish to connect with their body.
This work is personal for me; my mother is a breast cancer survivor and I have experienced the grief of losing loved ones to cancer.
In addition to my private practice and my work with Cancer Champions, I also enjoy working alongside Thriving Pink, a nonprofit organization that helps cancer survivors thrive by providing a network of support for women and their families. I look forward to breathing, moving and approaching healing together.
FITNESS AND MEDITATION INSTRUCTOR, CANCER CHAMPIONs
Founder and Owner, Allomi
I am the founder and owner of Allomi, a sanctuary for holistic health and healing. When I met Jen, I knew we were meant to work together to improve the lives of those looking to prevent cancer, or to mitigate the effects of treatment and live a healthy life after cancer.
Growing up as an actress and dancer, I was naturally drawn to creative expression, storytelling and performing. I have spent the last two decades in the fitness industry, and have been an entrepreneur for the last 10 years. After becoming a mother, severe low back pain led me to a meditation practice and spiritual journey and saw me opening Allomi (all-of-me). I believe my experience as an entrepreneur, business owner, fitness expert, holistic health coach, inspirational speaker, writer, and spiritual teacher helps me meaningfully connect with people and encourage behaviors that bring positive impacts.
At Cancer Champions, I am dedicated to sharing my experience and to inspiring others to live their best life. My desire and intention is to elevate community through movement, meditation and mindfulness.
Fitness Trainer, Cancer Champions
Certified Zumba Instructor
Certified Personal Trainer
I got my start in the fitness world by accident, when my mom made me attend a Zumba class with her. At first, I was that awkward, stiff, embarrassed guy in the back. It took a few of those horrid classes before I got in my groove. Soon, I realized that I enjoyed dancing, and the instructor saw something in me and encouraged me to get my Zumba certification.
Fast forward to today, where I am a fitness professional, having earned personal training and fitness credentials through the National Academy of Sports Medicine.
The journey to be fit and healthy is different for every single person. I understand that health and fitness is not “one size fits all.” I enthusiastically embrace the opportunity to support and encourage those on a quest to live a healthy lifestyle. I have worked with everyone from student athletes aspiring to achieve greater stamina and agility, to aging adults who are concerned about bone density, stability and strength. No matter what the motivation is for my clients, I am committed to helping them fulfill their desire to live a healthier lifestyle — while having fun in the process.
Meet Your Nutrition Team
Lead Nutritionist, Cancer Champions
Certified Nutrition Consultant
I have been involved in nutrition for over 20 years and in the last 6 years I have been lucky enough to work professionally in this field as a nutrition consultant and coach. I have worked with many different people suffering from a variety of conditions. This includes those currently in treatment for cancer and those doing everything they can to avoid a re-occurrence. It is hard to imagine that there is anyone on this planet that has not been impacted in some way by this disease, and it is becoming harder and harder to ignore the importance of nutrition for cancer care.
As Cancer Champions came to fruition, I was thrilled when asked to be a part of it. Having the opportunity to be a positive part of one’s cancer journey is a true honor.
I have more than two decades of experience working in nutrition, with the last six of those years helping to improve my clients’ health as a Certified Nutrition Consultant and Coach.
I developed a deep appreciation for food and its relationship with the body early in my life. Because of this commitment to wellbeing, I chose to attend the University of California, Davis, where I earned my B.S. in Nutrition Science. This education gave me a deep understanding of the chemistry of food and its metabolic relationship with the human body. As my own nutrition evolved, I became more aware of how food can be used therapeutically, and decided to advance my education in this area specifically. At Bauman College: Holistic Nutrition + Culinary Arts, I learned a great deal about whole food nutrition and its relationship to disease.
Over the course of my career, I have worked with people who suffering from a wide array of conditions, such as autoimmune disease, degenerative diseases, mental health, diabetes, and perhaps closest to home, cancer. I believe the best way to maintain good health is to adopt eating and lifestyle habits that are sustainable for the long term. These habits should be manageable and enjoyable, and they should support your individual energy requirement, optimize your digestive health, lower inflammation, and keep your blood sugar balanced.
Strengthening the body with whole food nutrition is my passion and life’s work. I am honored to be a part of the Cancer Champions team and, like my colleagues, am committed to supporting you on your health journey.
